Hihat foot chik processing

Postby gastric » Mon Sep 08, 2008 8:01 pm

I'm curious at what point MegaDrum triggers a foot chik MIDI NOTE. I reviewed the manual but it simply covered how to configure the various MIDI NOTES for the various hihat events. Does it invoke the foot chik trigger when the pedal is half closed? Nearly fully closed? Totally fully closed?

I'm asking as I have a serious issue with the Trigger IO in that it always initiates the foot chik about 1/2 way through the pedal travel with no way to control that trigger point. So if you're using an advanced VST like Superior 2 which can fully articulate the hihat based purely on CC data what you get is a mis-placed foot chik trigger in the middle of your pedal travel.

Open, less open, even less open, FOOT CHIK, partially closed, more closed, fully closed.

It's even more annoying as I have a fully acoustic hihat and stand converted to electronic. So visually the hats aren't even close to being closed when the foot chik triggers.

I'd think the foot chik should be happenening when my pedal is fully closed. So how does MegaDrum handle this?

MegaDrum initiates a chick only on a fully pressed pedal. The strength of the chick depends on a speed with which the pedal was pressed. At the moment the level at which the chick is initiated is not configurable as nobody complained about it or requested this feature.

Btw, can't Superrior initiate a chick itself based on received CC data and than you can filter out chicks coming from a MIDI trigger?

Maybe it can, maybe it can't. :) I should look into it further just to make sure.

My current implementation is to send the Trigger IO foot chik to a non-monitored MIDI CHANNEL so Superior 2 doesn't process that specific trigger. Then I configure the hat open/closed sounds to the exact same MIDI NOTE. Superior 2 provides all of the logic and processing. I simply configured hatsCtrl to the pedal (slider) and hatsTrig to the cymbal piezo. I do get a trigger when pressing the pedal all the way. But it's actually a cymbal piezo trigger due to the hats touching, and is then muted due to the pedal closing. So I'm not getting a true chik sound, and really doesn't sound even like a fake chik sound. ;) And I get no splash trigger, though I can get a splash-like trigger by really hammering the pedal to cause the cymbal piezo to trigger quickly.

So in conclusion. With the Trigger IO and Superior 2 and the configuration I'm currently using I really only get cymbal piezo triggering. No specific foot chik or splash. Note the Trigger IO does not include any splash event triggering at all.

In Superior 2 (or 1) you need to set only hatsTrig (all edge notes), hatsTipTrig (all bow notes), hatsCtrl (CC4 slider), AND pedal close. The splash is autogenerated.

By the way, dmitri, there is a problem with that. I think it was talked some time ago. When you step the pedal you only need to send one midi note: a chick OR a splash. You said that when you step the pedal, it should trigger a chick, and then, if you have raised the foot, trigger also a splash. But this is not the real feeling of this. This way, with Superior you get an overlapping chick+splash sound that is not very real. In fact, Superior, and many other samplers, provide a "complete" splash sound, I mean, with the small chick sound and the splashy sound, that an acoustic hat provides. If both chick, and splash, are triggered, the resulting sound is not realistic. Nevertheless, I must ask Gastric for a try on this matter. As he also owns Superior 2, he could check what I am saying (maybe I am wrong). I'll try to monitor Roland td-6 activity with hihat chick and splash playing to clarify which is the true behavior of a commercial pedal.

"Open Pedal" in Superior 2 is a foot splash. There's no defined chik sound in the beginning. Nor is there in the Addictive Drums "HH Pedal Open" foot splash sample.

Anyway, based on what Dmitri has reported MegaDrum will provide the hihat triggering features I don't currently have with the Trigger IO. And the Scan Time features. And the multi-zone cymbal features. And on and on. :)
